Time to Go to The Fair! by Sara Brookes

More than a few readers of my newest release, Get Off Easy, have noted that a few things in the book remind them of events that they’ve heard about before in real life. And they’d be right. During a section of the book, Grae, Saint and Boyce spend the day at a street fair that celebrates all manner of kinkery. At one point, the men encourage Grae to climb up on a St Andrews cross and let Boyce introduce her to the beauty of a crop (which, after seeing her reaction, Boyce immediately buys said item). They stop and watch a orgasm denial scene. And Grae buys a pair of jewel encrusted nipple clamps. There is also a ball later that night, where attendees are encourage to celebrate their likes and flavors of sexuality (and Grae runs into two characters long time readers of my books may recognize).

693221a_orig

Now, I can’t show you pictures from The Folsom Street Fair, the real event the fair and ball are based on (nearly all the ones I could find online are very, very NSFW), but based on what I’ve said so far, I think you get the general idea. 🙂 So much for real life not invading my books!

FINALgetoffeasyFULLRES-641x1024

Grae is ready take her membership at Noble House to the next level. In her sights are two premier Doms who sparked her hunger during a forbidden night long, long ago. Surrounded by the club’s legendary theme rooms, her body awakens to urges she has kept locked away. As the trio explore their kinkiest fantasies, Grae realizes she’ll have to confess her darkest cravings.

Saint and Boyce have been partners for thirteen years, both at the club and in life. They know exactly what Grae desires. But they also know she needs to be open and honest. Until she finds the courage to trust them unconditionally, the powerful Doms can only seduce and tease her in every imaginable way. The men know that even though the triad’s chemistry is explosive, in power exchanges—and love—no one gets off easy.

Warning: One very confused submissive is convinced she shouldn’t wedge herself between two gorgeous and irresistible alpha men who are into role play, geek kink and switching it up. So she’ll just have sex with them…or play voyeur.

Commentary on the “sharing a bed in Hugh’s parents’ home” scene by Lucy Felthouse

The process of writing Native Tongue was really enjoyable for me. I hadn’t planned to write a follow up when I wrote Desert Heat but I had so many people asking me to that I caved. And I’m glad I did. It was great to revisit the characters and to tell some more of their story, as well as give them lots more hot sex scenes… yummy!

One of my favourite scenes is when Hugh and Rustam share a bed together in Hugh’s parents’ house. Rustam’s uncomfortable about it…

Half an hour later they were both slipping beneath the crisp, clean sheets of Wilkes’ old bed. He chuckled, and shuffled closer to Balkhi. “This feels quite odd to me.”

Balkhi tensed. “W—what do you mean? Do you want me to go?”

Putting a hand on Balkhi’s bicep, Wilkes said gently, “That’s not what I meant. Don’t you dare go anywhere. I just meant it’s unusual. The others—Lacey, Ben and Joe—all had boyfriends and girlfriends stay over here when we were younger. I was the only one who didn’t. So sharing this bed with you, under my parents’ roof, is a completely new experience. Even though it’s allowed, it feels forbidden.”

“We have had enough forbidden to last us a lifetime.”

“True.” He moved closer still, and pressed a kiss to the sensitive skin beneath Balkhi’s ear. “Doesn’t mean we can’t be a little bit naughty though, does it?”

Balkhi edged away, eyeing Wilkes suspiciously. “We can’t!” he whispered. “Not here. It would not be… right.”

I couldn’t resist winding poor Rustam up. He’s so forward-thinking, so modern and relaxed in other ways, but he couldn’t quite let go when it came to making love to Hugh in his old room.

“It’s not different at all, is it? We’re adults, it’s consented, we love each other. And, most importantly, we have their blessing.”

“To have sex?”

“Actually, yes.”

“What!”

Wilkes chuckled. So much for not embarrassing Balkhi. “I wasn’t going to tell you this, but my mum said that she and Dad didn’t have a problem with us sharing a bed here, as long as we didn’t make too much noise.”

Balkhi covered his face with his hands.

I confess to giggling to myself as I was writing this. I had such a clear picture of the two of them in bed that the scene practically wrote itself. The more awkward Rustam felt about the whole situation, the more Hugh wanted to tease him. The two of them had had so many instances in the past where being caught together would have scary consequences, that giving them a forbidden factor which was embarrassing rather than dangerous was awesome. And it certainly got Hugh going!

My favourite snippet from the whole scene follows… this made me laugh out loud!

…a creak on the landing outside the door made Balkhi spring away from him like a scalded cat and sit bolt upright.

Turning his fearful gaze to the door, he whispered, “What was that?”

Unwilling to give up his chance at getting laid by allowing himself to laugh, Wilkes swallowed down his mirth and replied, “Someone walking past, that’s all. Probably Dad, checking all the windows are closed and locked, or something. Or possibly even Stanley, mooching about before he settles down for the night.”

“S—Stanley?”

They may be back on British soil, but the battle isn’t over.

When Captain Hugh Wilkes fell for his Afghan interpreter, Rustam Balkhi, he always knew things would never be easy. After months of complete secrecy, their return to England should have spelt an end to the sneaking around and the insane risks. But it seems there are many obstacles for them to overcome before they can truly be happy together. Can they get past those obstacles, or is this one battle too many for their fledgling relationship?

Author’s note: Although this story does work as a standalone tale, it’s recommended that you read the first instalment of the characters’ journey first—Desert Heat, which is available from all good retailers.

Fiction Versus Reality by Jessica E. Subject

Hello all!

HerAlienHero teaser 4

In 2014, the creators of the 1Night Stand line put out a call for the authors attending Romancing the Capital. They wanted stories about an author or reader who would have their blind date during the convention. I decided to write one, but had no idea what the venue looked like. I guessed and hoped some aspects were accurate. After attending the conference, I learned some of my details worked, while others didn’t. Here are some pictures and corresponding excerpts to show how reality is not always as I imagine.

picture 1

Excerpt: Melinda Rose tossed a quarter into the gleaming-white marble fountain near the porte cochère. I wish to find my soul mate, the man I’m going to marry, in the next year. She’d waited long enough, dated men of all ages and races, but had yet to come across her forever man.

Reality: No fountain near the porte cochère, but there was room for one if they removed the benches.

picture 2

Excerpt: After a quick glimpse in the mirror to ensure he’d return to his human image, Cooper slipped on his shoes and grabbed his key card. He didn’t know Melinda’s room number, but he would acquire it. He rushed out the door and down the hall to the stairwell, no patience to wait for the elevator. When he reached the lobby, he sidled up to the front desk.

A balding, middle-aged man raised an eyebrow at him. “Can I help you?”

Reality: Except for the stairs from the lobby to the second floor, I never did find the stairwell. Plus, I never saw any balding, middle-aged men at the front desk. Everyone there was young and on Friday they wore Ottawa Senators shirts. I would have included that if I’d known.

picture 3

Excerpt: At the ding of the elevator, he instinctively peered over at the opening doors. Melinda strolled out, her hair rolled up in a bun, and her lips a brighter red than when she’d left him in the suite.

Reality: The front desk was really close to the elevator, so I got this right.

picture 4

Excerpt: She caught his gaze and spun the other direction, heading down a crowded hallway.

Cooper darted after her, dodging yet another swarm of women along the way. “Melinda!”

She didn’t turn around, didn’t even pause. She marched across the plush carpet, straight through a double doorway.

Reality: Melinda would have had to go up the stairs first to get to the conference rooms.

While the hotel in my story did not exactly match the venue of the first Romancing the Capital, it could match one in the future. I had a blast at the con, and hope it continues for many, many years.

Ready for Love by S.J. Maylee

I’m fascinated by the process of falling in love. When I was young, I thought all it would take was meeting the right guy. So simple, right? Hardly. Finding the right person can be frustratingly difficult and that’s not the only thing that makes it complicated. You also need to meet them at the right time. My husband and I almost met dozens of times, but I’m so glad we met when we did. If I’d met him even a year earlier, I don’t think we would have dated, forget about falling in love.

It seemed almost impossible for me to find the right time for Ethan and Nadia, the hero and heroine in my new release, Desire Unexpected (Assassins and Sweethearts book 1). I’d created a hero who would never declare himself ready for love, regardless if I knew he was ready. Luckily, Ethan was not immune to Nadia. The more time the pair spent together, the more obvious it became.

Desire Unexpected explores not only the dangers of falling in love with an assassin, but also the overpowering craving that can lead to love and the happily ever after. In the excerpt below, you’ll find one of those moments that can alter the course of their lives. Nadia’s ready to give in and she wants to push the brave assassin to make the leap with her.

Excerpt:

“Why don’t you touch me?”

“I touch you all the time.” He angled his head, allowing her to come a little closer.

“Not really,” she whispered. Her focus zeroed in on his luscious mouth. She was certain if she reached out her tongue, she could drag it across his lips. The heat coming from his body and his divine manly scent called her forward. Her heart beat like a wild thing, awakening her pussy and her growing need for more. “You don’t really touch me.”

He took a step toward her and she stumbled back a step, finding the door. His hard body pushed her flat while he raised his arms to brace himself around her. “I’m beginning not to trust myself when I’m around you.” He brushed his nose along hers and his hard cock pressed against her belly. “You’re one giant temptation. I should have known better than to indulge my curiosity.”

“Do you want me to leave you alone?” She breathed a heavy sign, not wanting this moment to end, and feared she’d never get closer.

Life is passing Nadia Duskin by from her position in the mailroom. It only fulfills two necessities, keeping the repo man away and keeping her up to date on her sexy CEO.

Together, they find the kind of pleasure that could keep them satisfied for a lifetime. Her love may be the key to putting both of their lives back on track, but to what end? Opening Lines by Allison Merritt

The opening lines of Eban (The Heckmasters, Book 2) is a bit racier than the opening for the first book. I have a rough novella somewhere on my flash drive that opens with some light BSDM role play (yeah, it’s a historical paranormal—it will probably never see the light of day), but in Eban, the title hero wakes up naked with a sexy lust demon sitting on him with nothing to separate them but a sheet. If you’ve read Wystan (Book 1), then you know Rosemar, the demon possessing the heroine, Beryl Brookshier, is a sort-of ally in the battle for Berner. She also makes no bones about the fact that she wants to possess Beryl for eternity and she wants Eban to reign at her side.

Writing a character who’s inhabited by two minds was interesting. The original character, Beryl, joined the cast in Wystan, but she didn’t feature much in that book except for a few scenes because she was deathly ill—thanks to that pesky lust demon trying to control her body. When it’s revealed that Rosemar can take over Beryl, she becomes a useful tool in the fight to save the town and destroy other demons who don’t share her own personal goals. Getting into her head and showing the world from her jaded demon perspective made the story so much darker. At times it leaned so close to horror, I almost forgot I was writing paranormal romance. There were other good elements, like Eban trying to hide the fact that Beryl was possess from her. When she finally learns Rosemar’s in her head, she beings to doubt whether the love she feels for Eban is hers or not. It adds some nice conflict to the story. Writing two characters in one body, at war with itself was challenging, but fun. Writing a hero in love with one of them was even more of a challenge. He wanted to protect her, of course, all the time knowing if he didn’t find a way to banish the demon, she’d die—something he couldn’t bear to think about it.

The characters in Eban weren’t faced with just a half demon loving a human relationship like the characters in Wystan. They gained a whole new set of problems with a mischievous and bitter lust demon hanging around. On top of that, Eban’s whole motto for the book could have been: The road to hell is paved with good intentions. In attempt to rid Beryl of Rosemar, he summons an angel named Eliakim who wanders around dressed like a desperado. I’m really proud of the range of characters in this book. They’re definitely way out there, with plenty of cute brother snark between the Heckmasters as well.

Eban300 (1)

If love can’t save them, there will be hell to pay.

Grateful for his mother’s human blood that cools the dark fire of his demon father, Eban Heckmaster has set up a medical practice in New Mexico territory. But there’s no hope of living a normal life until he rids himself of a seductive demon that’s been pursuing him.

Vanquishing it won’t be as simple as sharpening his demon-hunting sword. The clever creature is hiding inside his best friend’s head, and she has no idea of the havoc she’s been wreaking, especially with his body.

Beryl suspects Eban knows why she’s been waking up with no memory of where she’s been or what she’s done, but he’s not talking. But when she inevitably learns what he’s hiding—or rather, what’s hiding inside her—she wonders if her love for him is real, or an illusion created by the demon’s lust.

Eban is losing the battle to hold his rising desire in check. There may be only one way to extricate Beryl from the beast entangling her mind. Call upon his demon blood…and offer it as a sacrifice.

Product Warnings

Contains a half-human, half-demon doctor who can heal anyone except himself, and a woman who’d blush if she could remember the sensuous torture she’s been inflicting on him. Could make you wonder if you should start listening to the voices in your head…

Do Bear Shifters Sleep? by Kerry Adrienne

When I was asked to be a part of this box set, of course I jumped at the chance to be in the company of such amazing authors: Milly Taiden, Lia Davis, Andie Devaux, and Vella Day. I’d just finished writing a wolf shifter book for a shared world series with another publisher, and was looking forward to doing something a little different. I talked to Lia, who writes about all sorts of cool shifters (including dragons, oh yes!), and the topic of bear shifters came up. I’d just been to my family’s cabin in the North Carolina mountains and we’ve dealt with bears there, so my brain started working on the possibility of writing about bear shifter. I love the mountains and have wanted to write a story set there, so this seemed like a great plan.

As Lia (the expert on this subject) can attest, she got several frantic emails from me. Do bears do this? What about that? I’d read some bear shifteSpring Fever Cover vFinal 300dpir stories, but not many—so I wasn’t sure what was acceptable in the mythos. The more I pondered, the more confused I got. When I asked her if bear shifters hibernate, she laughed and said, “If you want them to.” At that point, I realized I was being ridiculous and was over-thinking the whole process. I knew my park ranger bear needed to hibernate—at least sleep a lot during the winter. He’d already told me, in no uncertain and a little bit grumpy, terms, that he was going to be sleeping. So, I finally relaxed and let my characters tell their story. Once I did that, the story flowed.

As any group of authors working together on a set will tell you, you have to work together, even though you are writing your own stories. One day, it came up that three of us were writing stories set in almost the same place! Great minds think alike! So I moved my story to different mountains—which ended up working better since I needed other things to be in place for the impending war. Amazing how things work out! Now, I have things set up for a follow-up story or two.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy of this set—I’ve read the other stories and they are truly fun, and quite hot. The set will only be on sale for 99cents until one week after release on March 24, so get it while it’s cheap!

Thanks so much for reading!

Musical Score for “The Substitute” by Spencer Dryden

I love ball room dancing. Long ago in my single years some woman told me that dancing is foreplay. It’s true. There is an element of surrender in partner dancing that is like the best of sex. I have used dancing as a symbol of surrender in several of my stories.

In “The Substitute” my hero with an assumed identity of “Gary” is an accidental gigolo but as he and his client, Britta Sundstrum begin to connect emotionally, a romance blooms. It’s the dancing scene where this transition takes place and I use one of my favorite dancing/love songs, “Look What You’ve Done to Me” by Boz Scaggs as the background.

In the romance trope, we have to have HEA or HFN, but to me the most memorable taste in life is bittersweet. This song reminds me of a bitter/sweet moment about ‘the one who got away’. I’m very happily married to a woman who is my soulmate. But this song is about a woman I met before her that I let slip away.

The Substitute_200x300

A substitute plumber’s world turns upside down when he discovers his buddy’s business is providing more than plumbing services to an exclusive female clientele.

A journeyman plumber breaks union rules, risking the loss of his career, and assumes a false identity to substitute for an injured friend who owns a non-union plumbing shop. When “Gary” arrives on the job, he is stunned to discover that the client is expecting sex and not plumbing services. It’s the beginning of a day of surprises.

Motivated by his obligation to a friend and seduced by the allure of the client, “Gary” has some of the best sex of his life. He is at peace until he overhears the client making an immediate referral to a friend. Torn between conscience and friendship, he accepts the referral.

His day turns again as Britta initially spurns his services, much to “Gary’s” relief, then asks him to do some plumbing work. While he is working, Britta slowly drops her hostile manner, sharing more of her personal story. “Gary” finds himself longing for a deeper connection, but has to dispel Britta’s feelings of inadequacy and deal with his hidden identity.

Does a cover make all the difference? by Eva Lefoy

I have a confession to make. I look at books based on the cover first. Yep, I’m a sucker for a nice sexy body or a steamy scene that makes me say, whoa, I’ve got to know more! Heh. So to me, a cover is important, first and foremost. But… it’s not the only thing I look at in my buying decisions.

Secondly, I read the blurb. If the blurb matches the images on the cover and promises a good story, I often will buy the book – or, download the sample if I’m still not sure. If I read the sample and love it, I immediately hit the buy button!

This is how book buying is supposed to work! It’s what we’re all used to. In the old days, we’d go to the book store, browse a section and pick up an interesting looking book. Then, we’d study the cover before flipping it over to read the back cover blurb. If it sounded intriguing, we’d ruffle the pages and skim a bit here and there, see if anything caught our eye. Then, purchase in hand, we’d make our way to the counter.

Our buying decisions may have a taken a little bit longer than hitting the “buy button,” but it still works on the same principals. Cover. Blurb. Excerpt.

In the old days, the cover came directly from the book publisher. These days though, it can come from literally anywhere. Covers can be publisher-made, self-made, purchased from a third party, re-used, tweaked or even 3D. We are so all over the place with the new shiny aspects of covers that sometimes, it’s good to stop for a minute and take a breather. Inhale. Exhale, and look.

NGBT Large Ebook Old Cover

What I saw when I looked was this: the original cover for No Glass Between Them, a lesbian erotica story, had to go. Yes, I’d hobbled it together myself and with the help of friends. It had freshness and suited the story well, but … it was just lacking …something. It needed more …panache. In the interest of attracting more readers and urging them to take step #2 and read the blurb, I decided to get a new cover.

I shopped and I browed and I looked and of course, I’m always a day late buying a cover. Oh, yeah. It’s always “it just sold, sorry,” that I hear. I hesitate too long – I’m a Libra!! – and then the perfect one is gone. *sobs* Happens ALL THE TIME. But this time, I had a backup in the form of one super good graphic artist who helped make the new cover possible. Here it is:

Eva New Cover
Isn’t it delish? So much better than the old one, I think. And yes, the story IS about a stripper! This new cover fits the story and looks a bit more professional, yes? Do you agree? It is more pleasing to the eye, and would entice buyers to linger longer, no? But wait. There’s more.

After getting this hot new cover, I decided to go one more step. To make the story just as great as the cover. Keep in mind I first published the book in 2013, which meant I likely wrote it in 2012. It’s now 2015. My writing has changed. I’ve learned and grown (at least I like to THINK that’s the case! LOL). It was time to add the missing pieces to make the full buying experience better all the way around.

So that in the end…it’s not just about the cover after all!

Look for the new cover and book to hit virtual stores the end of March.

Once Upon A Time in Ireland…er Hawaii? by Sara Brookes

I still get odd looks when I tell people I have a series set in Hawaii starring Irish bikers. I can’t image the looks I would get if I told them the latest release of that series, Branded Irish, is about a sadist who likes to wear suits. I can’t pinpoint exactly when I decided Garvey needed to wear suits…a lot. Or maybe that should be I can’t pinpoint when he told me he wore suits…a lot. LOL He’s not a shy man, so that wouldn’t come as a complete shock.

Okay so he doesn’t wear suits all the time….he does take them off for play sessions with the woman who stepped back into his life for a second chance at love. Because ya gotta see what’s under the pretty packaging, right?

Lobster Cove’s BDSM Club by Marie Tuhart

Lobster Cove it the brain child of the owners Rhonda and RJ of The WildRose Press. On one of our weekly chat session Rhonda bought it to the authors and the brainstorming began. I happened to miss the chat because I was leaving for a writing retreat the next day. But I downloaded the transcript and began reading.

I saw the potential, so since I was on a writing retreat, I wrote out a short synopsis and sent it to my editor who then sent it on to the editor who was in charge of the project. I was told to go ahead and write my story, which was published as Red Club Temptation.

It was a challenge to place a BDSM club in the small town of Lobster Cove, but I was able to do by doing a little research. And had lots of fun writing the story. Here’s the blurb for Red Club Temptation:

RedClubTemptation_w9002_300She needs a dungeon master. He needs her secrets.

Red Club owner Jessie Michaels isn’t looking for love, just someone competent to monitor her dungeon in Lobster Cove’s only BDSM club. But a new Dominant catches her eye and makes her tingle in all the right places. She’s called away for business before she can catch his name, but not before that commanding voice tempts her for more.

Caleb Drake has returned to Lobster Cove to find out what makes the Red Club so successful only to discover the sexy redheaded sub he met the night before is actually his boss. He vows to keep business separate from pleasure, but the temptation to see if the iron-fisted club owner is truly submissive in the bedroom becomes too much.

But when Caleb’s ulterior motive is revealed, will Jessie be ruled by business…or pleasure?

Excerpt:

Time to find out if she was a Domme or sub. This time when their gazes met and held, he mouthed the word “Obey.” Her gaze dropped. He sucked in a breath. Damn, she was a submissive. And just what he needed. He couldn’t help himself as he strode across the room.

Caleb stopped when he was within touching distance, and her gaze never rose from the floor. Excitement stirred in his spine for the first time in a long time.

“Hello,” he said.

“Good evening, Sir.” Her voice was soft but calm, eyes still downcast.

He cupped her chin and tilted her head up. “Look at me, sweetheart, I want to see your eyes.”

Hazel eyes to go with beautiful red hair. He loved looking into the eyes of his subs, unless of course he had them blindfolded, and then he would make them use other senses.

“Are you available?” He glanced at her wrist. No band. He’d been told anyone with a black band was off limits.

“Excuse me?” a male voice intruded.

Caleb’s gaze left her to see one of the dungeon masters standing next to them. “You’re needed in the other room, Red.”

Her spine stiffened, and she lifted her chin out of Caleb’s hold. “Thanks, Ryan. I’ll be right there.”

Ryan nodded and gave Caleb the once over before disappearing into the private club area.

“Sorry, but I have to go.”

“I understand, but first.” He cupped her cheeks and brushed a kiss across her soft lips. She leaned into him when he released her mouth. “I’ll be here if you want to play later.” He released her and stepped back.

Her fingers touched her lips and then she smiled. “I might take you up on that.” Then she strode away hips swaying.
