More manga please! by Eva Lefoy

More manga please!

I sometimes wonder, why isn’t there more really meaty manga romance out there? I realize the manga style originated in Japan but I find myself wanting different storylines that are more like the books I usually read. I want more romance manga for U.S. readers’ tastes, and here’s why I think it’s a good idea.

First, being a former comic book collector – ah yes, I owned a lot of the original Akira series, Lone Wolf and Cub, the Watchmen, Batman: The Dark Knight, The Joker, Electra Assassin, even some Swamp Thing, Cerebus and Sandman, and much more – I’ve seen first-hand how so many of these stories get turned into movies. Like hugely popular action films. Which proves movie execs, like readers are always looking for new stories and it seems….

The more paranormal or dark the storyline is the better!

So, secondly, comics and manga seem to lend themselves naturally to paranormal & UF type works. What are the most popular romance genres today? Only sales figures will tell, but I’m guessing paranormal is at the top of the list. Which begs the question, why isn’t PNR magna flooding the market?

Perhaps someone will write some soon!

In the meantime, I’ll keep supplementing my reading diet with Fruits Basket, yaoi and Supernatural. Yeah, the last one isn’t a romance at all, but hey, the eye candy is worth the watch!

More power to the manga,

Excerpt from Unburied Hatchet, part of Sexy to Go Volume #6:

Next to her, Snake hit the turf with a thump and changed quickly. When complete, he growled, then looked up at her as if waiting for her to join him.

Good lord, was she really going to do this? Become an animal, like them? She fought the tingling sensation rolling up her spine with all her might, determined to hang onto her humanity, and deathly afraid of what the change would bring. She’d only had mere months to get used to the idea she harbored a wolf’s soul inside. Having the physical reality of it thrust upon her – by her father – made the situation even more desperate. She had to stop this – stop it at once!

But Conri’s force allowed no compromise. He watched her struggle, saw her resistance and offered only one more command. “Now.”

She dropped to the ground clumsily, her body tired and her spirit uncertain. Letting go wasn’t in her rule book. Trusting a father who’d abandoned her long ago wasn’t either. But beside her, Snake licked her shoulder, assuring her of his protection. Gritting her teeth, she closed her eyes and slipped into a darkness reserved for monsters from fairy tales. From deep inside, she heard a scream. The sound seemed to shake and tear her limbs apart, rearranging them until everything she knew of herself was gone. Then, like a whip crack, her new body snapped into place. She opened her eyes.

Before her stood a giant black wolf, solid as rock through the shoulders, its eyes an eerie gray. They shone with approval, with wildness, with expectation.

In her body, she sensed Conri’s non-verbal message. Run, daughter. Let’s run.

Character Background/Profiles for “When I Grow Up…” by Patricia Asedegbega

The storyline of the book “When I grow up…” revolves around Alicia and her world. At work she is surrounded by the five lawyers and her fellow personal assistants, the interrelationships between them are the key element to solving all the enigmas in the novel. Apart from Alicia, there is really not a lot of difference between the main or supporting characters in the novel as in their own way, each of them bring something to the table and help to construct the plot of the novel. The heroine in this novel tells the story from her point of view with her particular point of humor.

Alicia is a thirty-five year old young woman who comes from a normal working class family with very solid values. She spent a great part of her life in a small town environment, surrounded by her loved ones who were her world until she had to leave them to earn a living when she concluded her studies. There had never been a doubt in her mind about what she wanted to do, but real life got in the way of it all and she had to get a job and park her dreams, hopefully momentarily. Her family and friends if they had to describe her would say she is impulsive, generous, loyal and a dreamer who finds it hard to see the bad side of people…One thing they´d all agree on is the fact that till this day, she has still not been able to master the concept of having some savings for a rainy day. Like her mother used to tell her often “you have a hole in your palm that prevents you from holding on to anything that closely resembles money.”

Her life is greatly influenced by her ever changing relationship with her boss, Julia. A brilliant lawyer who has worked really hard for all she has and is both feared and respected amongst her peers, mostly feared by Alicia. A woman not afraid of anything or anyone and terribly difficult to read or see what is behind her carefully fashioned mask.

Alejandro, the senior associate of the law firm Alicia works in, is another of the important characters in the book. Also in his mid-thirties, he is young, successful, intelligent and very handsome. He is one of the most eligible bachelors in the country and is never in want for a female companion. Each one of them hopes that she will become the new Sra. de Fernández but he does not at all seem in a hurry to settle down to and is oblivious to the illusions of his numerous female companions. He has gotten the best education that money can buy and On him, it was not wasted. After his father left him the firm he worked all his life to build as his legacy, Alejandro his son, made sure that standards were maintained and held. He thinks he has control over his destiny, but he soon finds out that nothing is what it seems.

Ebele, Juan, Oscar and No-good Carlos are Alicia´s world outside the building and a very important part of it. “When I grow up…” is a story full of hope, with characters from very different walks of life that somehow have the same dreams and aspirations. It is a novel for anyone that wants something more, no matter their circumstances.

Cover - When I Grow Up

“You need a plan B,” said Alicia’s mother when at five years old she told her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Thirty odd years later, Alicia is on plan D: sharing a flat, no tangible savings, and working for hateful Julia, whose sole purpose in life is to make her existence utterly miserable. Good thing she has Oscar and the girls to make the long hours at work bearable. But when a series of events tears the close-knit group apart, putting friendships and motives under suspicion, will Alicia be able to restore balance and set things right? More importantly, will she ever be able to upgrade her life to at least plan C?

Help! I’m in love with an alien! by Jessica E Subject

Hello readers! I’m here with the heroines from my new box set, An Alien to Love, to engage in a panel discussion with them about dating an alien, or aliens, as is the case for one guest. So, being as we don’t have a lot of time, let’s get started.

Ladies, what was your first reaction when you learned your date was an alien?

Ava: I was shocked. I mean, I knew Nate came from a different planet, but I didn’t expect him to be Claustrian. Though, it explained why he vanished from my life all those years ago.

Carrie: You were shocked? I didn’t even know aliens existed until I met Frey.

Danyka: Me, too! I mean, I believed, but I never expected to come face-to-face with an extraterrestrial, let alone end up the soul mate to two of them.

Melinda: I was happy. I write about relationships with aliens all the time. Though, I never believed my childhood neighbor to be from another planet. His reaction to my finding out was much worse. Thank goodness he got over that.

Skylar: I’m not sure I can answer your question, since I’m not from Earth. But, when I learned the identity of my date, I ran. I thought he planned to take me back to the tentacled space pirate I was supposed to marry.

An Alien to Love teaser 11

All interesting reactions, but your dates seem to have worked out in the end. So, let me in on a secret. What’s the worst thing about being with a man from another planet?

Carrie: I couldn’t give birth to my daughter in a hospital. I had to disappear when I was ready to deliver, and remain in hiding for the early part of her life.

Danyka: Yes, it’s hard to live on Earth when the government wants to dissect the man or men you love.

Melinda: Wow, I hadn’t thought of that. Cooper has lived here all his life, but… Maybe we won’t have children.

Well, this is depressing. How about you all tell me the best thing about being with an alien.

Skylar: Finally, a question I can answer. He understands me. And he makes me happy.

Carrie: [nodding] He knew what I longed for from the moment we met.

Melinda: He’s all my fantasies come true.

Danyka: Fine, I’ll say it. The sex is out of this world.

Ava: Yes, explosive.

[The is a lot of smiling and nodding around the room.]

And on that note, I’ll let you all go. I know some of you have a spaceship to catch. Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today!

The Circles of Writing Life by KD Rose

Our circle starts with a new book, at about 90 degrees around. It’s brilliant! It’s original! Very few will “get” it! It doesn’t fit in a genre! It’s a hard sell! It’s almost unnoticed! Wait— did the exclamatory hyperbole change?

First books usually have the author’s internal organs indelibly attached, and whether the books are avant-garde or simply lost among the growing number published each month, most author’s still wouldn’t change a word.

The circle moves to authors who’ve had better fortune. Or talent. Or both. And those special ones who’ve done even more. For example, Dave Eggers. Dave Eggers does not need another article written about him. (Wouldn’t the rest of us like to say that.) Yet Eggers continues to be one of the most deserving. Egger’s is now known for his work with 826 National Nonprofit and McSweeney’s Publishing House. His actual award-winning first novel, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, almost takes a backseat.

Eggers is one of the co-founders of 826 National, a nonprofit that uses pirates, superheroes and mysterious voices booming from the back of rooms to create a learning environment for kids that actually produces results, while almost tricking them into increasing their reading and writing skills. The kids write books. Real books. Titled, bound, printed and sold books.

When we forget, when we’re so busy marketing our wares, selling ourselves on social media, pleading for unknown strangers to just take a chance on our book, it’s fitting and rejuvenating to return to the beginning of the circle.

“826 helps young people learn that language can be play, that work can be joyful, and that they, themselves can be the inventors and caretakers of their world.” – Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize winning author and 826 volunteer.

So in the middle of this authorship, this selling off pieces of ourselves-but hopefully not our souls, we can think back, and thereby forward. Words are play. Writing, (even marketing) is creating. A writer is a caretaker who bears responsibility for all his or her words touch.

Then perhaps the pen becomes a little lighter. Facebook becomes a way to share information that matters. Twitter becomes a tool to express wit and connect with other minds- minds that are enigmas yet have unlimited potential. And maybe, just maybe, one of those minds will add play to words, authenticity to redundancy, and launch a caretaking campaign that touches future generations. After all, who wouldn’t want a career like Dave Eggers?

Scandalous Intentions (Ladies and Scoundrels #2) by Amanda Mariel

When I wrote book one in my Ladies and Scoundrels series it was supposed to be a stand alone. Shortly after Scandalous Endeavors was written it became clear that I needed to write another book in this world and Scandalous Intentions was born. I have fallen in love with my characters and it seems readers have as well because everyone wants to know the rest of the cast’s stories. Ladies and Scoundrels is now planned to be a five book series with Scandalous Retribution coming out next.

In Scandalous Retribution we will get Lord Shillington from book one and Lady Claudia from book two’s story. IN book three we will get Lady Jane from book one and Lord Keery from book two’s tale. The series will wrap up with Lady Grace and Uncle Lewis.

“I do not believe you have any honor, my (1)

Here is a sneak peak at book three in my series: Scandalous Retribution.

She swayed and clung to his arm as he led her out into the open country air. What would compel a lady to become foxed in the middle of the day? And who was she? Surly they had never met before.

He turned her down a path lined with various flowers and green foliage. The details did not signify. She was clearly in distress and he intended to help if he could.

“Might we sit, Lord…what is your name?” Her giggle floated through the empty space.

He’d never heard a sweeter sound. It tugged at his heart, endearing the strange woman to him. “Lord Shillington. And yours?” He stopped in front of a cast iron bench. He could not take his eyes off her as she lowered herself onto the seat in a flutter of skirts and auburn curls. Her gaze reflected sorrow but her lips held a breathtaking smile. His heart rate increased.

“Do sit with me, Lord Shillington.” She patted the bench next to her.

He positioned himself near her, but not to close. Being out here with an un-chaperoned lady was scandalous enough. He had no desire to compromise her, or himself. Given her state, he’d no choice but to remove her from the gathering. But he had a responsibility to control the propriety of his behavior.

A cool breeze ruffled her elegant skirts, drawing his gaze over her form. Heat climbed into his cheeks as he studied her. Tall and lean, yet she possessed curves in all the places a man liked to see them. He trailed his gaze back to hers, then grinned. “Your name, my lady?”

She looked at him through hooded lashes, her green eyes sparkling. “Lady Claudia Akford.”

His heart skipped a beat and his throat tightened. The notorious Lady Claudia who’d caused trouble for Lady Sara and Lord Luvington. He should not be anywhere near her, least of all attempting to aid her. The scandalous lady brought on her own troubles.

Book Blurb:

AM_ScandalousIntentions_Front_HiRes (1)When faced with losing his inheritance, notorious rake Lord Julian Luvington sets his sights on Lady Sara. She’s as respectable as they come, just what his father ordered. But the lady shall not be easily won.

She’s determined to marry for love or not at all, and she’ll do anything to obtain the freedom granted to men. A blackguard like Lord Luvington could destroy her hard-won reputation, but marriage to him also offers her the opportunities she can’t achieve on her own. What’s a lady to do?

When Lord Luvington refuses to abandon his pursuit, Lady Sara proposes an arrangement. Only the price may be more than either bargained for. Lady Sara could lose more than her social standing and Julian could lose his heart.

Lullaby – a deleted scene by Catherine Peace

Gemini nearly drove me nuts. I never thought I’d get it done, and at one point almost threw in the towel. Thank the writing gods for awesome friends/crit partners/sanity keepers.

After some intense heart-to-heart (read: bitch) sessions, the story finally reached a cohesive point. I rewrote the first bit and felt great about it. Until my editor wanted the story. Once I got my edits back, I sat down, looked at what I’d written, and began the arduous process of sewing it all together. Unfortunately, something I really wanted in there didn’t quite make it.

To strengthen the relationship between my heroine Shadi and her father-figure Ezra, I thought it’d be awesome to show that side of their relationship through a lullaby. After all, he practically raised her and her twin brother. But since Ezra was a slaver—and ended up selling them anyway—the lullaby needed to be inappropriate. Cue “Long Black Veil.”

The scene where Shadi sings it didn’t fit, but I wanted to share it because I really love it.

For a while, she kept to herself, curled into a ball on the softest cot she’d ever laid on, unable to sleep. The engine’s hum lulled her into a doze, but every other sound she heard pulled her back into full alertness. She expected one of the nyx to kick her awake. When no one came, she was both grateful and concerned. What did the man expect of her?

“She walks these hills in a long black veil,” she sang under her breath for what had to be the thirtieth time. “She visits my grave where the night winds wail. Nobody knows, no and nobody sees. Nobody knows but me.” She sighed. “Ezra, where are you? You haven’t forgotten us, have you?”

Eventually, she headed to the cockpit where the man sat in quiet repose. Sitting in the vacant co-pilot’s chair, she studied him. Scars marred his forearms, and the markings of hard work covered his hands, same as hers. In his face, she read weariness and a small trace of fear around his eyes. What right did he have to be afraid? “Why.”

He jerked awake, as though from a nightmare.

Uri drew his pistol. He swiveled around, and seeing the girl, put the gun back in its holster, impressed that she remained stone-faced. “Why what?”

“You took me. Why.” Though she asked questions, her voice held only accusation. “Where’s Ezra.” Her voice broke and pierced his heart. Fully awake, he reached for her, but she pulled her knees up against her chest, blocking him out.

“I don’t know,” he answered and hoped to God she wasn’t asking about the Ezra he knew. “I’m sorry. I don’t know.”

“Stop lying to me!” A sob shook her frame. He wrapped his arms around her, unsurprised when she struggled; he simply tightened his grip. “He promised,” she muttered against him. “He promised….”

Being one of the Embassy’s glorified treasure-seekers has its perks…

An Interview with Mia Sanford from Risky Business by Dena Garson

Hi Mia – thank you so much for agreeing to join me here on Literary Lagniappe for this interview. To start us off, why don’t you give the readers a little bit of your background?

MIA: Okay, sure. I’m Mia Sanford. I am Analyst in the Marketing Department. I have a background in mathematics and minored in business statistics.

Mathematics and statistics? Wow. You must really like working with numbers.

MIA: *chuckles* Yes, I do. I like finding patterns in data and projecting trends. It keeps me challenged. And the people I work with are fun.

I understand you’re very good at your job.

MIA: Well, I make every effort to provide the information our management team needs in order to grow the company.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

MIA: A group of girls from work and I play in a softball league. But when we’re not practicing or playing in tournaments we like to get together at The Cabana and share pitchers of margaritas.

Are you a morning person or a night person? And how do you know?

MIA: Definitely a morning person. I know because I often wake up before my alarm even goes off. I like to get into the office early and knock out all my email and run reports before everyone else gets in and clogs up the system.

What is your greatest extravagance?

MIA: Normally it’s that fancy chocolate you can only buy at the gourmet at the mall. But lately I’ve been keeping my eye on a purse I found online. It’s way more than I should ever spend on a bag but it’s perfect! Just the right size for my wallet and things as well as my tablet. And the leather is so-o-o-o soft. Maybe after payday…

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

MIA: I finished my degree with a 3.9 grade point average. If it hadn’t been for that physics class, I might have managed a 4.0.

What is your most treasured possession?

MIA: A locket my grandmother gave me when I turned sixteen. It was one she had gotten when she hit her sweet sixteen. I plan to keep up the tradition and pass it down to my granddaughter.

Awww… I love that! Family heirlooms are special.

And do you plan to have those grandchildren by way of Jake?

MIA: (blushes) It’s a little early in our relationship to plan something like that but I’d certainly like to think the possibility exists.

So would I!

Well, thanks for joining me for this interview! And you’ll have to keep me posted on where that locket ends up.
Book Blurb:

Mia Sanford has admired Jake Hudson from afar ever since she transferred to Marketing. She might be comfortable tangling with the company playboy in meeting rooms but not in private. Facts and figures she can handle, but that blue-eyed devil is out of her league.

Jake was impressed with Mia, the sexy analyst who provides his monthly Marketing data, the first day he met her. Not only is she smart and reliable, she has legs that have inspired a few sizzling hot workplace fantasies. However, her girl-next-door demeanor and the company’s no fraternization rules force Jake to keep things strictly professional.

When Mia becomes the target of an embarrassing betting pool at the annual office party, Jake alerts her to the danger. But since he never expressed an interest in her until now Mia isn’t certain if he’s really looking out for her, or just trying to win the pool himself. If she trusts him, it might place both her reputation and her heart on the line.
