Character Background/Profiles for “When I Grow Up…” by Patricia Asedegbega

The storyline of the book “When I grow up…” revolves around Alicia and her world. At work she is surrounded by the five lawyers and her fellow personal assistants, the interrelationships between them are the key element to solving all the enigmas in the novel. Apart from Alicia, there is really not a lot of difference between the main or supporting characters in the novel as in their own way, each of them bring something to the table and help to construct the plot of the novel. The heroine in this novel tells the story from her point of view with her particular point of humor.

Alicia is a thirty-five year old young woman who comes from a normal working class family with very solid values. She spent a great part of her life in a small town environment, surrounded by her loved ones who were her world until she had to leave them to earn a living when she concluded her studies. There had never been a doubt in her mind about what she wanted to do, but real life got in the way of it all and she had to get a job and park her dreams, hopefully momentarily. Her family and friends if they had to describe her would say she is impulsive, generous, loyal and a dreamer who finds it hard to see the bad side of people…One thing they´d all agree on is the fact that till this day, she has still not been able to master the concept of having some savings for a rainy day. Like her mother used to tell her often “you have a hole in your palm that prevents you from holding on to anything that closely resembles money.”

Her life is greatly influenced by her ever changing relationship with her boss, Julia. A brilliant lawyer who has worked really hard for all she has and is both feared and respected amongst her peers, mostly feared by Alicia. A woman not afraid of anything or anyone and terribly difficult to read or see what is behind her carefully fashioned mask.

Alejandro, the senior associate of the law firm Alicia works in, is another of the important characters in the book. Also in his mid-thirties, he is young, successful, intelligent and very handsome. He is one of the most eligible bachelors in the country and is never in want for a female companion. Each one of them hopes that she will become the new Sra. de Fernández but he does not at all seem in a hurry to settle down to and is oblivious to the illusions of his numerous female companions. He has gotten the best education that money can buy and On him, it was not wasted. After his father left him the firm he worked all his life to build as his legacy, Alejandro his son, made sure that standards were maintained and held. He thinks he has control over his destiny, but he soon finds out that nothing is what it seems.

Ebele, Juan, Oscar and No-good Carlos are Alicia´s world outside the building and a very important part of it. “When I grow up…” is a story full of hope, with characters from very different walks of life that somehow have the same dreams and aspirations. It is a novel for anyone that wants something more, no matter their circumstances.

“You need a plan B,” said Alicia’s mother when at five years old she told her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Thirty odd years later, Alicia is on plan D: sharing a flat, no tangible savings, and working for hateful Julia, whose sole purpose in life is to make her existence utterly miserable. Good thing she has Oscar and the girls to make the long hours at work bearable. But when a series of events tears the close-knit group apart, putting friendships and motives under suspicion, will Alicia be able to restore balance and set things right? More importantly, will she ever be able to upgrade her life to at least plan C?
