Cocktail Hour with Lisa Fox

So, Emily Cale and I were talking recently about adding some extra content to Literary Lagniappe for all our readers, a little something extra twice a month to show you all that we care and are thinking of you. She suggested that we do some recipes, share with you some our favorite meals and desserts. A lovely concept, but as many of you may know, I don’t cook. Ever.

But I do drink.

I learned how to drink—really drink—in New Orleans. That’s where the word Lagniappe comes from as well, a concept I came to deeply love during my time down in the Big Easy. I also learned to bartend there. And I think we all know that if there is one thing every author needs, it is an endless supply of quality cocktails. I am here to help—to keep you all in good spirits. (Ha!)

Since I owe most of my knowledge to my escapades in the French Quarter, I thought I’d start this segment off with a New Orleans tradition: The Hurricane.

Enjoy!

New Orleans Hurricane

2 oz white rum (Bacardi)
2 oz dark rum (Myers)
1 oz 151
1 oz orange juice
1 oz pineapple juice
1 oz cranberry juice
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon grenadine syrup
crushed ice

Garnish: orange slice and cherry

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Pour over crushed ice in hurricane or very tall glass. Add garnish. Drink. For maximum awesomeness have two.

In reality, she can generally be found at her desk with a cup of coffee close at hand. Or maybe a martini. It really depends on the day.

  1. What is 151? I’m in Canada and even though I bartended for many years (haven’t for sometime), I have never heard of it?

  2. Hurricane…sounds like my kind of … drink.
