A Little Sister’s—and Writer’s—Respect for her Protector by Kacey Hammell

When I started writing Guarding Midnight, it wasn’t with the intention to pay homage to my oldest brother, but the story evolved in one particular scene, split seconds while I was writing it, and it turned into one of my most favorite books to write.

Gavin, our hero, is a Retired Army man. Tough, full of gruffness but a lot of sensitivity and bravado. He keeps his cards close to his chest, and takes protecting his own very seriously. After some … hot moments … with our heroine, Shree, she notices the tattoo on his back. This is where the story evolved for me. By the time the scene was done, I was a big ball of tears and Kleenexes cluttered my desk. I hadn’t expected the scene to play out as it did, or my big brother’s tattoo to enter the picture. Originally, I was just going to have a Canadian Flag on Gavin’s back, but – as the cover also shows – the glorious bald eagle is very much present.

My oldest brother, Will, drew that tattoo when I was about fourteen. My folks weren’t tattoo fans, but my big brother was a giant in my eyes who pushed boundaries and always seemed to live like a ‘rebel without a cause’. LOL Once he finally got the tattoo on his back, he promised someday I’d get the drawing of the tattoo. About two months before his death, on my wedding day, he gave me the drawing and made me promise to take good care of it. It is locked away in a safe, laid out with other important documents, and never gets touched. I wanted to take it out and scan it for all my readers to see as I did blog posts, but I’m afraid of touching it, and ultimately losing it.

Thirteen years ago we lost Will, and maybe the tattoo appearing in Guarding Midnight is his way of letting me know that he is always with me. Perhaps Will, who protected his little sister every day, identified with Gavin. *g*

Canadian Muscle …

When Desires Need Protecting.

No one knows sacrifice better than former Army Sergeant Gavin Bennett. He’s witnessed firsthand the emotional, physical and mental toll of being caught in the crossfire. Being a bouncer-slash-bodyguard may not be Gavin’s dream job, but he’s willing to do just about anything to help out family. When Gavin reports for his first day of work, he quickly discovers a woman who threatens to crack his legendary cool.

Shree Walker is on the run from a dark past she tried to shut away. Battered and broken, a happily ever after doesn’t exist for her. Ready to start fresh with a new life in a new city, she is happy dancing at the Vixen Club. She’d be even happier without the presence of the prickly new bouncer who won’t let anyone or anything get past his carefully guarded defenses. He’s a distraction she doesn’t need. And a temptation she can’t resist.

When Shree is kidnapped by the criminal mastermind hell-bent on taking the club at any cost, Gavin has to make a decision. Hold tight and continue to keep Shree at arm’s length. Or break down his walls and take a chance on something more powerful than them both: Love.

  1. Thank u for hosting me today!!

  2. wow now that’s a story! Love the concept and so sorry for the loss of your brother.

  3. Guarding Midnight is a fantabulous story, and even though there is external conflict, it’s so very character driven. Kudos! And I would have loved to have known your brother…he sounds like an amazing person. Just like you xx

  4. Your post was wonderful and touching. My sister is gone now, it’s been almost 20 years. When we were kids we went to my grandmas cottage in Lake Lucerne near Lake George. The cottage had a covered wrap around porch with wooden floors and the shower was at the end. We waited until grandma went into the shower and we sat in front of the door and played jacks counting very loud, one, two, and grandma would come out of the shower and tell us to stop, then she would go back in the shower and we would repeatedly play jacks. We had a great time.

    • What wonderful memories for you! Aren’t Grandma’s the cutest? :o) Do you think she ever caught on to your shenanigans?
Thank you for sharing such a touching memory with us Laurel.
      Have a super wknd.
