Sexy to Go, Deleted Word-Dookie! by Jocelyn Dex

I was super excited to be invited to write a story for the Sexy to Go, Volume 1 short story collection that features 10 other awesome writers.

I jumped right in and wrote a story–Assistant Seduction–and thought it was good to go. Yea me! I knocked it right out. Then I reread it a couple days later. Um. Where’d all that word-dookie come from?

Dude (chick, whatever :-), I had a bunch of unnecessary information at the beginning of the story. My fingers had spewed word-dookie. Half of it was revealed later in the story–laced in here and there as it should have been. The other half was totally irrelevant.

Here’s a small sample of what was deleted. It’s embarrassing.

Two years ago, Kyla King quit her high paying job and gave corporate America

the finger. She’d scrimped and saved, living in the cheapest, shittiest apartments, eating

Ramen Noodles and clipping coupons all for one purpose–so she could quit her day

job and afford to do what she really wanted to do…

There are two more paragraphs of that crap, but I’m too ashamed to post any more. Haha. Needless to say, all the word-dookie is gone and the story is much better for it!

When I start reading a story that has unnecessary info dumps, I roll my eyes and if it goes on for too long, I skip to the next book in my Kindle. It’s boring. It’s slow. My brain is screaming, “Who cares? Get on with the action!”

Question for readers: Do info dumps bother you enough to make you quit reading a book altogether, or do you simply skip it and assume you’re not missing anything important?

Question for authors: Do you ever catch yourself info dumping?

Thanks to the Literary Lagniappe chickadees for having me on today!

  1. I do word dookie all the time! Once you get used to it, it’s not so bad! LOL

  2. I read everything. Gives me great insight into how that author writes. Helps me to determine if they are improving their craft (if this is not their first book) or if they need to improve their craft. Writers learn more with each book they write and their craft should be improving. If they have many books out there and they still have not improved their craft, then they are not worth reading any future books.

  3. Thanks for hanging out with us today, Jocelyn!
