Writing Inside a Box by Kacey Hammell

I’ve tried many times to write stories specific to publisher sub calls. And have never been very successful. Writing “Inside a Box” – with constructed specifications by someone else – end up feeling too constricting to me. And I haven’t always been successful in submitting those stories, and some just didn’t get completely written because of the confinements I couldn’t work within.

When the Indie Author Group I’m a part of came up with the idea of Dasia Island and the Hot Summer Nights Anthology, I had many hours of fretting and panic. I really wanted to participate in it, loved the thought of the Island and there were a lot of freedoms we were able to take as individuals.

Thankfully this time I got smart in how to write a story with certain specifications that were a must, and after many days of contemplations, I figured it out. I decided to write the story as if it was any other story then went back through and added details that all the stories needed to have. It took a bit of work, the details needed to be intricately woven but I think the end result is amazing. Readers have already stated their wish to vacation on Dasia! LOL

As all authors would probably say, we all grow and learn how to handle each story differently than the last. I have to agree with this, and no longer panic at the thought of trying specific submission calls or at the thought of the next Indie Author Group Anthology Project. I’ve learned to write Inside, and Outside, of the box. *g*

  1. Thanks for letting me stop by today!!

  2. Hmmmmm…. Kacey, while it’s probably the absolute antithesis to Dasia Island, I’d have to say that my favorite vacation destination is WALT DISNEY WORLD! Can you imagine what it’d look like if Disney put together an “adult” island retreat? Not sure if that would veer into scary awesome or scary CREEPY… LOL!

  3. OH WOW!!! That’s such a kewl idea!! I’m thinking Scary Awesome LOL!

  4. I still don’t think I can write within the confines of line specifications, but we’ll see soon enough. You’re right, funny how we grow. Great post ladies!

    • Just have to have that change of mindset, write like any other story — that you know you’ll be able to write (ie: genre match) — then dig in. I was lucky with some of the freedoms I was allowed with the story, as well, the “rules/descriptions” of Dasia Island weren’t constricting.

  5. Naples, Florida it’s great for relaxing by the pool, a laid back place. There are restaurants, jazz spots, dinner theater and shopping.

  6. I seem to have better success writing inside a box, with a fox and a lox, not to mention green eggs and ham. If I didn’t have the tight framework and focus the box provides I’d be shooting out all over in all all directions like a Roman candle, and more than likely, would not finish. Ever. But I’m working on something outside the box again, though, so we’ll see how it goes.

Vacation spot? If I can’t have a yacht to cruise the Mediterranean….well, I was going to say NOLA. But nah. Holding out for the yacht.

    • Some friends think I’m a crazy nut anyway, and there’s no box I can fit into LOL Maybe it’s just a fact I don’t like being “told” what to write. I like forge my own path 😀
