Because I hate to say goodbye to a character, it often happens that even as I type a virtual ‘The End’ on my stories, a part of me is already asking ‘but what happens next!?’ In the case of Tethered, before I’d even started submitting it an opening scene for a possible sequel (which is still just an idea as yet) had materialized. So especially for you at Literary Lagniappe, I’m going to give you a sneak peek at the ‘what happened next’ after Tethered finished and how the sequel might begin…
Zander stared, his vision blurring as the luminous green script hung in the air before him. Damn, but he’d read this a dozen times and still couldn’t remember the details. And this had to be read, checked and signed off in less than six hours. He sighed and began again.
A pair of hands attached to the ghostly outlines of arms appeared in front of his face, just before covering his eyes.
“Are you coming to bed any time soon?”
Zander chuckled at the sultry voice. “Have I failed to satisfy you enough, ‘Ree?”
The hands vanished—literally—to be replaced by 150lbs of curvaceous, ebony-skinned and decidedly naked Su materializing in his lap.
“Yes, you have. You’ve been gone two whole weeks, and only back in our bed for two hours.”
Zander’s libido jumped to immediate attention, but he restrained his enthusiasm as Tyree kissed him, her mouth full of warm, capprey-flavored promise.
“If the council ever learned that you have regained your Su abilities after all—”
“They’d want me back,” she finished for him. She gazed into his eyes, her face very serious. “They’re not going to find out. And I’m never going back to them in Refuge.”
He stroked her back, an ache in his chest at the thought. “I remember a time when you were very adamant about returning.”
“That was then.” She kissed him again, and his restraint wavered. “This is now.”
“Tyree…” He tried to push some authority into his voice, but it was hard when his body was so fully involved in appreciating her warmth and proximity.
“Take me to bed,” she commanded
“I really need to finish this report.”
“Finish it later.”
His breathing hitched as she wiggled on top of him. “Damn Su,” he whispered. “You know I won’t have the energy later if I let you have your way…”
For Tyree of the Su, being an assassin isn’t simply something she was trained for. It’s the sole reason for her existence. A genetically enhanced clone—one of many in Refuge—she’s about to learn her secluded lifestyle, and that of all her kind, is under threat by a race capable of neutralizing their special talents to leave them defenseless.
For Zander D’joren, being a diplomat has not only cost him his appearance, but also the love of his life. Scarred, grieving, he must nonetheless continue in his role as co-delegate to the fearsome Tier-vane or risk a conflict that could only end one way.
Now both of them need to keep each other alive and maintain a perilous deception long enough to renegotiate the treaty with the Tier-vane, or throw their people into a war that could wipe out Terrans and Inc-Su alike. But there’s more at stake than humanity, whether true or modified. Can the love growing between them save them both? Or merely hasten their destruction?
