Spring Might Finally be Here by Emily Cale

Shhhh….If you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll let you in a little secret. Spring might finally be here.

It’s hard to tell in some parts of the country (Chicago, I’m looking at you), but the winter that never seemed to end might finally be parting ways with us for the time being. I spent the weekend in the Windy City and spent several days shivering and wishing I owned heavy winter gear. Now that I’m back in Portland, I woke up to a big surprise: Spring has arrived. How can I tell?

  • I only needed to war one coat today– and it wasn’t my heavy one. I’ve been layering to keep warm the past several months and while I like the flexibility of having two different jackets with me, it was nice to lose some extra weight this morning.
  • Trees have flowers on them. No, really! I was starting to think that all the trees were permanently dead, but a few of them are perking up and they are really pretty.
  • It no longer seems crazy to go somewhere for lunch. I’ve been sticking to the closest source of food for the last few months. It’s made my lunch a little boring. Now that it is nicer out, I’m remembering all the other places nearby that offer a little variety.

Has Spring started arriving where you are? How can you tell?

  1. Usually the arrival of my tulips signifies Spring for me… especially because EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. I have lived in this house, my tulips have come up & then we have one last “hurrah!” of snow — ON my tulips. LOL!

  2. I wish I could say spring is here. Yes, temps are above freezing, and the snow is melting. BUT, we’re supposed to get more snow tonight. Old man winter is hanging on tight here is Southwestern Ontario, Canada.
