Take Me Back to Chicago by Catherine Peace

I grew up on 70s rock. Boston, Kansas, Foreigner, the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, you name it. I love a lot of current music too, but for some reason, 70s rock gets me every time, and I can’t help turning up the volume on the radio when “Carry on Wayward Son” comes on (who can, really?). As a result, one of my go-to bands—and the one I’ve seen most in concert—is Chicago.

Over the summer, my mother and I went to see them at a small Tennessee fair, which makes time number 5 that I’ve seen them. (I’m 28, by the way.) And during one of the songs, the singer is alone onstage with a keyboard and a spotlight on him, and he breaks out into “You’re the Inspiration.” Just him and his keyboard. I’d heard the song a million times, but it never occurred to me just how romantic and intimate it is. And I remember asking Mom, “Are men really that romantic?”

Probably the wrong answer for a romance author to ask.

Through the rest of the concert, the gears kept turning, and my story came to be.

I listened to tons of Chicago songs for this story and researched a few for Claire’s Chicagoland series, which is the series she’s working on when her date with Ty pops up. Set in Prohibition-era Chicago, each book has the title of a Chicago song. They’re all over the place in this story because it seriously wouldn’t have happened without them. (Even fake Chicago cover band 25 or 6 to 4.)

So here’s a few of the songs I practically listened to on repeat.

Color My World (one of my all-time favorite songs period)

Make Me Smile

Beginnings (I imagine Ty singing a more rocked-out version of this to Claire)

So you can start your own collection of Chicago songs (or, you know, something more current….) I’m giving away a $15 iTunes gift card along with a free copy of Complete Me to one lucky winner!

Book Blurb:

CP_Complete Me_MD A romance author who needs to love….

Best-selling romance author Claire Ergleston confines her passions to the pages of her books. When she receives a 1Night Stand date ‘to give her something to talk about in interviews,’ can she let herself be swept away?

A rock star who needs to let go….

The past has a chokehold on former rock star Ty Krause. Instead of killer tunes, he kills time writing passable songs for a British boy band and his nights wishing he had the balls to say goodbye. In a last ditch effort, he signs up for 1Night Stand, thinking that a night of no-strings-attached sex will help him break the leash of his past.

From the moment Claire and Ty meet, sparks fly—but can they overcome their pasts or will their potential love story end on a sour note?

Available March 21, 2014!

*Giveaway: Free copy of book & $15 iTunes GC. Comment to win. Contest ends 3/16 at 11:59PM EDT.

Author Bio: Catherine Peace has been telling stories for as long as she could remember. She often blames two things for her forays into speculative fiction—Syfy (when it was SciFi) channel Sundays with her dad and The Island of Dr. Moreau by HG Wells. She graduated in 2008 from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in English and is still chasing the dream of being super rich and famous, mostly so she can sit around in her PJs all day and write stories. When not being a slave to the people in her head, she’s a slave to two adorable dogs.

  1. Sounds like a really cool concept for the book! You mentioning “Wayward Son” and how it’s one of those songs that you always sing along to, made me think about other songs like that. Kansas’ “Dust In The Wind” is one of those for me… as is the Eagles “Hotel California”. Hmmmm….. wonder what a story inspired by Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” would be like?? LOL! Oh well – back on task. LOVE the 1NightStand stories and LOVED “This Time Next Year” & how Madame Eve hooked up Kiernan & Moira!

  2. That’s some great music, Cate! Thanks so much for hanging out with us today!

  3. Native Chicagoan here, way older than most of my writer friends. Love the concept of your story, Catherine. Hotel California does it for me and Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow- Fleetwood Mac, oh yeah. I incorporate pets in every story I’ve written. They warm the heart and lift the spirit.
    Best to you.

  4. Ladies, you are my people. Seriously.

#1, Thank you for the compliments on This Time Next Year! I think you’ll like this one even better. It’s not quite as heavy as TTNY, but it’s still very near and dear to my heart.

#2, Thank you for having me! I love hanging out with you guys!

#3, Thanks!!! I love this story so hard. I rock out to Fleetwood Mac as frequently as possible. They’re always a great sing-a-long band.

  5. Woot Woot! I kinda knew that Chicago was a influence in the book, but I didn’t know that the concert started the whole thing. So awesome. I think this is my favorite ‘Cate’ story yet. Though I loved TTNY.

I’m always up for 70s rock. My absolute favorite is Boston. So excited that they are touring this year. 🙂

  6. BOSTON IS TOURING?!@?!?!?!?!!?!?!!?!?!? HELL YES!
