Cocktail Hour with Lisa Fox

The winter weather has settled in right along with the holiday season and there is nothing cozier at this time of year than a toasty mug of mulled wine.

mulled wine

  • 1 bottle (750 mL) of red wine (I like Merlot, but Cabs and Zinfandels also work nicely)
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 orange, peeled and sliced – put the whole orange in the pot, rind and all
  • 1 green apple, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of brandy
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

NOTE: some people add star anise as well, but I am not a fan of anything licorice flavored, so I leave it out. You can add two or three if you like that taste

Preparation: The key to perfect mulled wine is keeping it on a low, low heat and avoid boiling it. Combine all ingredients in either a large pot or a slow cooker. Gently warm the ingredients on low heat for 25 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure that the honey and sugar have completely dissolved. When the wine is steaming, it’s time to drink. Ladle it into mugs and enjoy!
