Musical Inspiration by Kerrianne Coombes

Music is a massive inspiration for me and my writing.

When I write, I very much need silence, peace and quiet so that my characters can talk to me. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t use music to inspire me, and form my mood for a scene I am readying to write.

After I drop my kids off at school, I make sure I have a long walk or run with my headphones in and my Ipod on—LOUD 😉  Sometimes I do the housework and blare my music for a little while as I plan my scene.

I am one of those people that ‘feel’ the music and if a song can make me shiver to the bone, or light up my mood, then I’ll listen to it until I cant listen to it anymore.

Music truly is the food for my soul and my writing.

Through different types of sounds and styles, I find I create such different characters. If I look back through my books in order, I can ‘see’ what music I was listening to at that time, by the way my characters are behaving or what they are doing.

As I am here to promote my new Paranormal Romance Snow White The Demon Huntress, I figured I would share the playlist that I created that story to.

Snow White is nothing like the Disney created character. My Snow is a demon hunter, a woman with which no one would fuck. She is so complicated and difficult. I loved writing her.

But what makes me laugh, is that I can see why I created her by the types of music in this playlist. But this is what my muse wanted to create and hear, so I listened.

Amy Winehouse—You Know I’m No good. (Attitude in spades)

Keane—Somewhere Only We Know (Such a sexy song)

The Killers—Bones (Just awesome band, I listen to all of their songs, but this song spoke to me lots for this book)

My chemical Romance—Disenchanted (Love it so much)

Twin Atlantic—Yes I Was Drunk (Genuinely amazing band)

Nelly Furtado—Maneater. (Makes me want to strut 😉

Pink—Nobody Knows (That song just talks to me)

I could go on and on, like I said, I adore music, but these were the songs that really helped me write Snow White x

  1. Thanks for having me x

    • It’s great having you over Kerrianne! Thanks for hanging out. That is a great playlist. I’m a huge fan of My Chemical Romance. They are great for writing.

      • You should listen to Twin Atlantic then, they are a really cool Scottish version of MCR. X

  2. Hey Kerrianne! I’m much the same way. When the weather is nice, I like to take the kids to school then walk down to the river and back home, listening to music.

Lately the song that inspires me is Clarity by Zedd ft. Foxes. Though I’m listening to a lot of Econoline Crush for my latest WIP.

    All the best!

    • Hi Jessica.
It’s a great way to clear your mind and get in the zone x i haven’t heard of either of those bands, so I think I will do some googling x

  3. It really depends on the mood I’m in. My hubby hates country so I can’t play any when he is around. Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On and Pretty Woman are my feel good songs plus my rocker song – (Standing in) The Line of Fire. Standing On The Edge of Goodbye plus my rocker song are ones that I love to have the music full blast so the walls vibrate. I’m very eclectic and listen to everything under the sun. It might be one song from one album that I like.

I read the blurb for Snow White. Very interesting.

  4. Anything by Two Steps from Hell, though I’m obsessed with their Archangel album right now. Krytepria, Within Temptation, Nightwish, and Leaves Eyes are high on my writing playlist too.

  5. Don’t you just love t when you can fall in love with an entire album? I am more of a singles purchaser, but occasionally, I will love more than two songs on an album x thanks for popping by Annikka x

  6. I love the playlist. Snow White sounds like an interesting character. My go to for music is Muse, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy. They always seem to get me out of whatever funk I am in.

  7. What song inspires me? It depends on the book. For my Tribe series…it’s Crazy Bitch. For Masked Hearts, it’s Falling Slowly. For my Dominion Falls series…that’s a toughy…there’s too many that inspire that one. 🙂
