My Road to Finding the Right Publisher by Krista Ames

I am a contemporary romance author and my first 4 published are sweet short stories in anthologies with TMP, quite by accident actually.  I’d submitted a short story to an epublisher that seemed pretty nice.  I’d even gotten halfway through 2nd round edits when all communication stopped.  I thought my heart would stop as well.  No one wants to ever be part of a publisher going out of business but that’s what I had to assume when no one would answer any emails for several months.  Once the website went down, that was my sign so…the search began.

I knew someone that had recently started her own house with an open invite to submit anytime so I sent that first story and it just exploded from there.  I had a blast writing the short stories and was thrilled when each of the anthologies released.

With my #5 submission, I went in a bit of a semi-erotic direction instead of just sweet romance like the first 4.  I love men in uniform so I put together a novella which was rejected right off the bat.  I looked up another contact and got lucky to publish with Ruby Lioness Press and Second Chances, my navy novella released. Woohoo!   Unfortunately that elation was short lived and within 6 months they sadly went out of business.

Okay, this ‘going out of business’ line was starting to give me a serious complex lol.  It’s definitely frustrating to say the least.  The thrill of being a published author is an awesome feeling and twice now I’d gotten the wind knocked out of my sails.  Luckily I have a great support system that kept me from giving up!  I stayed in contact with the last publisher owner and with a little help have decided I am going to be self-publishing Second Chances along with 2 other stories in that series so keep an eye out for that bit of news 😉

So where to go from here huh?  Trust me, I’ve definitely questioned myself many times over the last few months but I’ve also done a lot of searching on the internet looking for publishers.  There are a lot of great ones out there to fit every author.  Basically you just have to check out their submissions pages to know whether what you’ve written will fit in.    In my many searches I’ve even contacted a few just to clarify some submission questions I’d had.  One in particular was super great and very informative.  They are Decadent Publishing.  Now I’d heard of them a lot and thought, now this one is a big house with a lot of authors and a lot of stories.  No way am I ever going to get one of my stories in there.

Well apparently ‘Never Say Never’ would apply here because in one of my talks with the senior editor, I’d mentioned writing a cowboy story and that I wanted to submit it to them.  She then mentioned there was a contest going on at that time called The Western Escape’s Shooting Star Contest.  A contest designed to find the next story in the series Western Escape, centered around the fictional town of Freewill Wyoming.

What did I have to lose?  Not much according to my recent past so what the hey…pulled out the cowboy story from my hard drive, read it a few times to make sure it didn’t sound completely ridiculous since it was only my second time writing anything erotic.  Waited a month, not so patiently I might add and who would a thunk it, I became one of 3 finalists!!  Now my adrenaline was pumping on high J  Then I’m told to sit and wait another month while the judges re-read over the finalist stories and then I get an email.  I was afraid to open it…only to see…….

No one was more shocked than me and now I have an officially published Contemporary Erotic Romance with Decadent Publishing’s Western Escape line…

Take Me Home, Cowboy

Ally Kincaid returns to Freewill, Wyoming, to see her father after a two year absence. Anticipating a quiet family reunion, she finds herself butting heads with her father’s foreman instead. The man’s arrogance and sexy drawl push all her buttons, making her wonder what he’s hiding beneath his cowboy swagger.

Matt Gentry walked away from the past and shies from the future. No ties means no one gets hurt…until the boss’s daughter, a hot, green-eyed blonde, tempts him to break his own rules.

When tragedy strikes, will building tension and pride destroy their growing attraction or show them the way home?

Author: Lisa Fox

World-renowned neurosurgeon, master chef, secret member of American royalty, seducer of legions of beautiful, outrageously sexy angels and demons and vampires and werewolves and the occasional pirate, Lisa Fox has done it all… in her own mind. In reality, she can generally be found at her desk with a cup of coffee close at hand. Or maybe a martini. It really depends on the day.

  1. Sounds like quite a journey! Thanks for hanging out with us today!

  2. I haven’t had quite that experience, but had difficulties with a former publisher. I’m extremely happy at Decadent though. 🙂

    All the best, Krista!

  3. Great post! It is hard to find the right place for a work sometimes, but when it works out, things can be great!

  4. Congratulations! I hope things continue going your way! Take Me Home Cowboy looks great and I’ve got it at the top of my wish list!

  6. Thanks Faith and thanks for stopping by 🙂

  7. Love your heroine’s name! How’d you come up with that? LOL!
Have to say, I have been very happy with Decadent also. Lines of communication are very open. I have a great editor, with whom I really feel free to do or say anything! And the warmth of the other authors is terrific.
Today, when my upcoming release got bumped up to 2/1 and I had no guest blogs lined up before 2/12, I went into terror mode. And a whole bunch of Decadent authors — the lovely Krista among them — came riding in with the calvary. Hmmm. Calvary. Now there’s an idea.

  8. I think I meant cavalry, right?

  9. Oh Taryn….you are just wonderful, along with every one of my fellow Decadent authors !! Isn’t that funny, I picked that name before I met you but it is a great name 🙂 I also agree with you on all counts about Decadent. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of their group. …….Now Cavalry sounds like a great idea…your next story 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
